Janet Cloaninger

O&M Specialist and Curriculum Writer

I have had the pleasure of working with children and adults who are blind or visually impaired since 1994, when I was a counselor at a Lion’s camp for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. After earning dual master of arts degrees in orientation and mobility and teaching children with visual impairments, I went on to work in public schools and as an independent contractor for governmental agencies as well as non-governmental organizations.

In addition to working in the US, I have volunteered as a consultant at several schools for children who are blind or visually impaired in Asia. In this role, I provided training to staff and parents and made home visits to assist parents in meeting the complex needs of their children. In addition, I advised administration regarding curricula and instructional techniques and lectured to university students about visual impairments.

I have been a member of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) once 2002, where I currently serve as an accreditation program reviewer for agencies and schools serving individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf and blind. I also serve as a core team member of the international services and global issues division.
